Nuclear Medicine (bone scan)

Equine Services offers digital nuclear scintigraphy (bone scan) for aiding in lameness diagnosis.  This is particularly useful with horses with multiple lameness issues.  A radioactive isotope (technetium-99) is injected intravenously which is acquired by areas of active bone remodeling and soft tissue inflammation.

The large gamma camera is then used to identify areas of abnormal uptake.  Once these areas are identified further imaging and evaluation with digital radiography, ultrasound and MRI may be performed.
